A Survey on the Typhoid Carrier in a Rural Area

Abstract
The author surveyed 4,002 persons among 6,926 residents to see the healthy typhoid carrier rate at Dongnae Area, ShindongMyon, ChunseongGun, KangwonDo, Korea, for 16 days from September 5, 1972 to October 31, 1972.
The surveyed population rate was 57.8%, on which we did retal swabs with a glass rod.
The glass rod was transferred into transport medium (Cary-Blair), and cultured for close bacteriological examination at the National Institute of Health, Seoul beginning the next day.
There was neither a case of Salmonella sp. nor Shigella sp. detected.
The fact that no case of Salmonella sp. and Shigella sp. was detected is interpreted as follows.
1) There could be, in fact, a fixed number of typhoid carriers among 4,002 persons surveyed but they were not detected in this kind of survey.
2) If this survey were to involve the missed 2,924 persons, there might be some detected cases of Salmonella sp. and Shigella sp.
3) Perhaps there might be actually no case of a carrier in this area, so there was no case of a carrier detected among the surveyed population in spite of the elaborate bacteriological survey.
The author mentioned the method of typhoid carrier control in the previous discussion.
